# Compress images

Make photos and screenshots smaller so they fit upload limits and send faster. **Compressed on your device, never uploaded.**

**Compress image** is an interactive tool that runs in a web browser at https://spirikle.com/tools/compress-image/. It processes files on the visitor's own device; nothing is uploaded. There is nothing to call from Markdown — open the page to use it.

## How to compress images

### 1. Add your images

Drop one or many images onto the box above.

### 2. Choose how small

Set the quality, optionally cap the largest side (often the biggest saving), and choose to keep the format or save as JPG or WebP.

### 3. Compress and download

Press Compress images. You see how much smaller they got, and download them one by one or as a ZIP.

## Where the savings come from

Two things make an image big: its pixel dimensions and how carefully each pixel is stored. A 12-megapixel phone photo shrunk to 1920 pixels across is a fraction of the size and still fills a laptop screen, so "Largest side" is usually the biggest win.

Quality between 60% and 80% is hard to tell from the original for photos. WebP is typically smaller than JPG at the same quality. If an image cannot get any smaller with your settings, it is left exactly as it was — you never get back a bigger file.

## Questions

### Which format gives the smallest file?

For photos, WebP, then JPG. PNG is best kept for screenshots and graphics with few colours.

### Will the photo lose its location and camera details?

Yes, for every image that is re-saved: the browser drops the EXIF data, including GPS location — often a privacy bonus. An image that could not be made any smaller is handed back untouched, details and all.

### Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs entirely in your web browser: your files are opened and processed on your own phone or computer, and nothing is sent to a server — not to ours, not to anyone else's. The page is even set up so the browser itself blocks it from sending data elsewhere. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

### Is it really free?

Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no daily limit, no watermark and no paid version of this tool. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on our servers, it costs us nothing to run, so there is nothing to charge for.

### Is there a limit on the number of images?

There is no fixed limit, because nothing is uploaded. The only limit is your device's memory: very large files (hundreds of megabytes) work on a computer but may be too much for an older phone.
