# Compress JPG images

Shrink JPG photos for forms, e-mail and upload limits, with a quality slider you control. **Your photos never leave your device.**

**Compress JPG** is an interactive tool that runs in a web browser at https://spirikle.com/tools/compress-jpg/. It processes files on the visitor's own device; nothing is uploaded. There is nothing to call from Markdown — open the page to use it.

## How to compress JPG images

### 1. Add your JPGs

Drop the photos onto the box above, or choose them.

### 2. Set quality and size

Lower the quality for a smaller file — 60–80% is a good range — and cap the largest side if the photo is bigger than it needs to be.

### 3. Compress and download

Press Compress JPG and download the results.

## Fitting a photo under an upload limit

Application forms often cap photos at a few hundred kilobytes, while a phone photo is several megabytes. Setting the largest side to 1280 pixels and quality to 70% gets most photos well under 500 KB.

JPG compression throws away detail the eye is least likely to notice. Each re-save loses a little more, so compress from the original rather than an already-compressed copy.

## Questions

### How do I get a photo under a specific size, like 200 KB?

Lower the largest side first (1280 or 1920 px), then lower the quality step by step until the size shown is under your limit.

### Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes — the same format. .jpg and .jpeg are two spellings of the file extension.

### Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs entirely in your web browser: your files are opened and processed on your own phone or computer, and nothing is sent to a server — not to ours, not to anyone else's. The page is even set up so the browser itself blocks it from sending data elsewhere. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

### Is it really free?

Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no daily limit, no watermark and no paid version of this tool. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on our servers, it costs us nothing to run, so there is nothing to charge for.
