# Compress PNG images

Shrink PNG screenshots, logos and graphics — transparency included — by reducing them to a smart palette of colours. **Nothing is uploaded.**

**Compress PNG** is an interactive tool that runs in a web browser at https://spirikle.com/tools/compress-png/. It processes files on the visitor's own device; nothing is uploaded. There is nothing to call from Markdown — open the page to use it.

## How to compress PNG images

### 1. Add your PNGs

Drop the PNG files onto the box above.

### 2. Choose the colours

Keep "Same format" and choose 256, 128 or 64 colours. 256 looks identical for most screenshots and graphics.

### 3. Compress and download

Press Compress PNG and download the smaller files.

## Why PNGs need a different kind of compression

PNG is lossless, so simply re-saving one barely changes its size. What shrinks a PNG is using fewer colours: a palette of up to 256 carefully chosen colours instead of millions. Screenshots and graphics rarely use more, so the result looks the same at a fraction of the size.

Transparency is kept. For photos saved as PNG, converting to JPG or WebP is usually a far bigger saving — both are options here.

## Questions

### Does it keep the transparent background?

Yes, when you keep the PNG format. Saving as JPG fills transparent areas with white, because JPG has no transparency.

### Why did my PNG barely shrink?

It may already use a palette, or be a photo. Try 128 colours, or save it as WebP.

### Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs entirely in your web browser: your files are opened and processed on your own phone or computer, and nothing is sent to a server — not to ours, not to anyone else's. The page is even set up so the browser itself blocks it from sending data elsewhere. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

### Is it really free?

Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no daily limit, no watermark and no paid version of this tool. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on our servers, it costs us nothing to run, so there is nothing to charge for.
